The Duality between GDP and Ecology – The Case of IKEA

The Tharawat Magazine , where I had a great pleasure to publish in several ocasions has launched its new web site. There is one article I  particulary enjoyed writting. Here it comes: _________________ From Nature.com When world-renowned psychologist Daniel Kahneman coined the concept “What You See Is All There Is” (WYSIATI), he did so in order to describe the common tendency to simplify the complexity of the everyday phenomena that surround us. In his own words, WYSIATI means that we use the information we have as if it is the only information. Instead of contemplating and planning based on things that we don’t know, we make do with what we do know. This concept is central to the functioning of our mind. In our daily life we tend to give answers based only on the information we have available without acknowledging the importance of the data that is not available to us at the moment. Furthermore, we don’t necessarily consider how this could substantially alter th...

God save the Social Democracy

" If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him ". For many years I have been banging my head to find out what made Voltaire reverse the Genesis and desire for men to be creating God…. And then I came to Sweden. This hard working, innovative and nature loving people, faithful to their respect for freedom, independence and common good, rolled up their sleeves and in a few generations time invented God and called it social democracy.             It is closest the men can get to experience the benefits of faith in social order based on equality and progress. Some predict that it can’t last much longer and that it is a question of time before its institutions collapse. They blame it to the fact that it is an EU nation which, per capita, takes in the most refugees from the Middle East. But as long as its core values such as Open, Authentic and Caring remain intact it will stay strong and help integrate all the good willing newcomers. ...

Color blinded on Mars (2nd)

Transform CO2 into diamonds. It is what some Danish artist proposed to Chinese authorities as a response to reduce unbearable levels of pollution that their major cities have reached, due to several decades of irresponsible behavior of this hybrid social model that combines wild capitalism with bold communism. If we were to look into the mythology, the closest representation of this hybrid creation would be Hydra, the seven headed monster from the Greek mythology. For every head chopped off, the Hydra would regrow one or multiple heads. So, in this story the Artist proposed converting pollution into diamonds and hydra (of course) both it. What Hydra knows is that the purpose of art has never been to solve the problem, but to bring it out to human attention. What the Artist doesn’t (or doesn’t want to) know is the power that hydra has over our attention. It controls almost all the channels that shape the human attention. And any idea that helps hydra keep all its heads at the...

Don't let them win

New York, Madrid, London, Paris, Brussels, Nice,…. Bagdad, Mogadishu, Alepo,… Who’s next? When is it going to end? We can continue arming us to teeth’s and bombing far away deserts, but it will only make us keep on walking our streets in fear, making sure that there are no suspicious faces before taking that bus, metro, train or plane. Eventually it will provoke locking ourselves voluntarily more and more into the safety of our houses. And then, that’s it. They win. All of them. The ones that put bombes and shoot innocent people on the streets and those whose greed made possible for them to come out of their holes and get so powerful persuading hopeless kids that their acts will bring justice. There is no justice in the death of the innocent. Not here. Not there. Not anywhere. That is why instead of seeking solutions in violence trying to exterminate the symptoms, we must go to the cause. Follow the trail that opened up the Pandora box and keeps causing misery, inequal...
